Desmond Bartholomew Selected as a Trainee Under the STAGE Program.

STAGE Prairies is pleased to announce that Desmond has been selected as a STAGE Trainee with his project, “Federated learning for privacy-preserving bone fracture prediction models.”

Desmond is currently a PhD Student in the College of Community and Global Health at the University of Manitoba, where he is conducting research under the supervision of Drs. Lisa Lix, Kevin McGregor and Nils Daniel Forkert.

Before embarking on his doctoral journey, he earned a Bachelor’s (Honours) in Statistics from the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, Nigeria. In 2024, he received the Male Category: Best Research Publication Award, a competitive honor awarded by the Multidisciplinary Research Team, a non-profit organization at the Federal University of Technology.

Desmond has previously made contributions in applied statistics and data science, including research on financial systems modeling using signal processing techniques and statistical methods for sustainable procurement, environmental, and social standard practices.

His STAGE project aims to develop a federated machine learning framework to predict osteoporotic fractures across multiple Canadian provinces using administrative health data.

STAGE is proud to support Desmond in his research endeavors and looks forward to his contributions in advancing data-driven methods for population health research.
