Colin Begg, PhD, is the incumbent of the Eugene W. Kettering Chair at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, and Head of the Prevention Control and Population Research Program. Previously he was on the faculty at Harvard School of Public Health for 12 years, and at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He holds a PhD from the University of Glasgow, UK. Over his career Dr. Begg has been interested in statistical methods that support the broad array of disciplines used in cancer research. He has developed many methods relevant for studies in the areas of clinical trials, cancer epidemiology, the assessment of diagnostic tests, health services research and meta-analysis. His work has also involved numerous collaborations with investigators conducting cancer research studies in these fields. In recent years he has been pursuing the idea that cancer risk can be uniquely informed by studying patients with multiple primary malignancies. This work has included the development of efficient designs for case-control studies, methods relevant for cancer risk prediction in carriers of major cancer genes, and models for estimating the distinct cancer risks of rare individual variants within these genes. In related work he has been investigating statistical methods for distinguishing second cancers from metastases using genetic profiling of the tumors.
