Andrew Van Domelen Selected as a Trainee Under the STAGE Program.

STAGE Prairies is pleased to announce that Andrew has been selected as a STAGE Trainee with his project, “Mapping Genetic and Cellular Mechanisms Linking Age-Related Hearing Loss Subtypes to Dementia Traits.”

Andrew is currently a PhD Student in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics at the University of Manitoba where he is conducting research under the supervision of Drs. Britt Drögemöller and Lisa Lix.

Before embarking on his doctoral journey, Andrew earned a Bachelor’s of Science from Brigham Young University.  Since beginning at the University of Manitoba, he has been the recipient of multiple research awards, including a Research Manitoba studentship and a CIHR Master’s studentship. These and other awards reflect his dedication to research excellence and his growth as an independent scientist.

Andrew’s STAGE project aims to identify specific genes, cell types, temporal expression patterns, and cellular communication networks involved in age-related hearing loss and dementia. He is currently focused on integrating genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, and biomedical genetics across multiple scales, from population-level associations to the cellular mechanisms that may explain them.

STAGE is proud to support Andrew in his research endeavors and looks forward to his contributions in enabling finer-scale analysis of the genetic architecture underlying the age-related hearing loss-dementia relationship and reveal cellular mechanisms that may inform therapeutic interventions.
